What is a first-then board?

A first-then board is a simple visual that shows one activity followed by another. Words and familiar pictures can make the order visible at home, in a classroom or in another shared setting. A first-then-next board adds one more step.

For another explanation, see Texas SPED Support’s First/Then Card.

How to use your board

  1. Write a short first activity and what comes afterward. For example: “Put shoes on,” then “Go outside.”
  2. Optionally add your own pictures and a Next step. Choose A4 or Letter and print.
  3. Show the board while talking through the order; update the steps to match the actual plan.

Adapt the words and pictures to the person and situation. A board is a communication aid, not a diagnosis, treatment or substitute for professional advice.
